This is a breakthrough in beginning guitar because we sat down & determined how many things "all at the same time" that video lessons were requiring of students. It turned out to be anywhere from 9-12 things at once! Thats downright inhumane! It created a very large "drop-out" rate. Thats right, more than half of the people of all ages gave up & sadly, it wasn't their fault. The teaching systems were simply loading them down with too much all at once. When you intend to learn to play the guitar, you NEED slow. It takes time and patience to learn any instrument. Dan is very thorough and encouraging and calm. This was written for all ages. You don't need an expensive guitar to learn to play. A uke would do (4 string). This dvd is very easy to follow.

You want to learn to PLAY the guitar, not talk about it! But instruction materials often forget this. They spoon feed you so many "character building" musical skills that the learning process becomes way too overwhelming, not to mention unbearably boring. Dan Huckabee does a great job of getting you to actually PLAY the guitar in his DVD "Your First Guitar Lesson." By the time you're done, you'll have 19 chords under your belt, You'll be able to play th 23 songs Huckabee demonstrates, and you'll have the tools to play countless more. Huckabee starts off by showing the parts of the guitar and spends some time talking about the guitar setup before teaching a few four-string chords that can be played on guitar, tenor guitar, or even ukulele. After explaining how to play the chords, he shows how to string them together to play several songs, including "Happy Birthday" and "Mountain Dew." One great thing about DVDs is that you can freeze the chord frames on the screen while you build them on the guitar, and if you have an A-B repeat you can practice "House of the Rising Sun" along with Huckabee until your neighbors are sick of it. Huckabee continues with some 5 and 6-string chords, providing a new set of songs to play with every bunch of new chords. "Your First Guitar Lesson" is well organized, with easy access to every song and set of chords on the main menu, and comes with a companion booklet that illustrates all the chords and songs on the video.

Mr. Huckabee teaches about 3 chords at a time, showing you how to play a few songs with each. Ultimately teaching you 19 chords, and 23 songs. There is alot of information in this video, but you can pause, rewind, and watch over and over again until you understand perfectly. Dear Mr Huckabee, I feel greatly honored to get a kind message from you in person. We will consider your recommendations. I forgot to tell you that my daughter is also following "your first guitar lesson", and we're also delighted with the results on that instrument, although she is doing it at a slower pace than the violin (she is currently working on "sloop John B"). We were amazed when she started singing to the chords on the guitar. This is also useful for the violin, because in classical violin, it takes a long time before you begin to understand harmony; she hadn't yet learned to play double stops, but thanks to the guitar, she knows what chords are, not just arpegios. And now with the bluegrass fiddle chords, she has really discovered a new dimension for playing. I am also waiting to receive "beginning finger-picking guitar" (for the future) and "beginning blues guitar" (that's my taste, she may not take it up), which I ordered on amazon about a month ago.
