Failure rates have been high in the past for beginners due to the confusion caused by reading & playing at the same time. Reading is good if you have the patience & want to take the time, but don give up your dream just because you prefer not to read. Volume one: Dan Huckabee has you playing the chords to 18 songs in 4 different keys in practically no time at all. Dan starts you right off playing songs, because he skips the sight-reading that most piano instruction requires. This allows you to concentrate on the one important thing, "putting your hands on the piano & playing". Traditionally, piano has been taught from a formal approach while guitar has more commonly been taught from a "hears how you do it" approach. The beginning guitarist learns to form his fingers on a few chords, then begins the arduous task of trying to move his fingers from one chord to the next. With enough practice (& painfully sore fingers), he eventually succeeds at switching from chord to chord quick enough to sing a song. On piano, these forms come so much sooner & without sore fingers! You will learn left & right hand techniques, rhythmic stylizations, the Nashville Numbering system, theory that will help you figure out songs of your own choosing, finger exercises, & much more. Note: In college level music, the piano is required for non-piano players because the piano helps to understand music for all instruments. "Beginning Rhythm Piano" is the perfect instruction everyone who playes another instrument like Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Trumpet, Violin, Bass etc. 1. What exactly is "Rhythm Piano?" Answer: "Rhythm Piano" is the way the piano is played when you e singing a song. Its not a self contained solo piano piece, but rather the way people play when they accompany themselves singing. 2. Do you need to learn "regular Piano" before you start "rhythm piano?" Answer: No. In fact its better to start on rhythm first, similar to the way guitar is approached. This course is for the total beginner, or for the reading piano player who wants to learn to play by ear, or for someone who plays another instrument who wants to add piano as a second instrument. 3. Do I have to learn to read music? Answer: No. Learning to read is great, but quite time consuming & tedious. This series does not teach sight reading. Dear Dan I thoroughly enjoyed your "Beginning Rhythm Piano Volume one." You've broken the lessons down so well and have the concepts in a very logical order. I particularly liked the way you added one new theory concept every time you introduced a new key. This adds information at the right pace, while keeping the focus on songs. I am a Suzuki teacher and Suzuki really doesn't discuss theory at all with the student. I confess that one dissappointing weakness of my Suzuki background is that I've never been able to accompany well or to make music with a band. Hi Dan, I'm an adult who has taken piano on and off during my life with minimal success. Your DVD is really the best! I'm on volume 2 now. All these years and nobody has ever made it all so simple...and clearly explained! I play guitar mostly and now I want to learn the fiddle. I hope you have a DVD for that too. I teach piano and I know how anxious my high school students and even fellow staff members are to play something right away. This video doesn't miss a beat, moving quickly to the three major chords used in dozens of songs (and the host proves it by playing through several songs, one right after the other). His easy manner and the lighted keys along with repetition serve to get new piano players off to a running start. I even liked the fact that it encourages people to sing the melody while playing the chords, thus not overwhelming them with playing a melodic line as well.
